Preferred Alternative Recommended for Route 228 Improvements

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recommends Alternative 1 (ie: online) as the Preferred Alternative for the Route 228 Improvement Project.

The roadway is being designed as an Urban Boulevard. This concept evolved from Community Advisory Committee (CAC) member suggestions to develop an option that fits the context of the community. This design is consistent with local land use plans and has the overall least impact on residences, businesses and the environment.

A Closer Look at the School Area Alternatives

Four alternatives were studied in detail around the Mars area schools. They were the: Northern (Blue), Online (Yellow-Black), Southern 1 (Yellow-Aqua-Black), and Southern 2 (Yellow) alternatives. The Project Team compared the alternatives by considering environmental impacts, engineering criteria, and the ability of the alternatives to meet the project needs. Environmental resources include but are not limited to wetlands, streams, historic resources, 4(f) Resources, cemeteries, farmlands, Agricultural Security Areas, and impacts to residences and businesses, and public facilities.
